  • Clothing donations

Are there hidden treasures in your closet that have not been worn for years but are still in good condition? These clothing items may be just right for people who often came with only the clothes on their backs. Especially young men, often quite slim, but also (pregnant) women and children regularly need clothing, be it for winter, working or summer.

The Caritas clothing store opens twice per month on the second and fourth Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Clothing and household items are accepted from 4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Caritas has opened an additional clothing store for people in need (local as well as newly arrived people alike) with the onset of the wave of refugees. The clothing store in the Ecco Hotel is open Tuesday and Thursday and accepts donations on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

  • Donate bicycles

Mobility allows refugees to explore their surroundings and get to know the roads, corners and landscapes of the region. The easiest way to get to know one’s new home is to mount a bicycle and just start pedaling. The eyes have enough time to capture everything and to experience the typical smells of the landscape and town. It is thus essential to provide newcomers access to bicycles – whether as a donation or for a small symbolic amount. Already in the very beginning, when numerous people were arriving in Schermbeck at the same time, a small group of people started a relief campaign that consisted of repairing and storing old bicycles to donate them whenever refugees could use them. This way, Horst Schmitter, Hubert Schäpers, Gerd Kensy and Karl-Heinz Bartsch became the mobilizers of Schermbeck. After a large batch of over 65 bikes, the helpers continued to accept single bikes, repairing them at home and then providing them to refugees. Children’s bikes are also welcome. All donated bikes should be basically functional. Bikes that are ready to be scrapped cannot be accepted.
